John M. L. Brown graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1970 and served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1974. In 1977, following graduation from the Vanderbilt University School of Law, he entered the private practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. Brown regularly represents law-enforcement personnel in high-profile excessive-force litigation in state and federal court and departmental disciplinary proceedings. He is on call for the Fraternal Order of Police (local and national) and for the Southern States Police Benevolent Association to travel to the scene of police-involved shootings, in-custody deaths, and other critical incidents involving law-enforcement personnel.
Typically, he will assist the officer throughout the investigation of the incident, including statements, if any, given to criminal investigators or internal affairs personnel.
