Welcome to the Office of John M. L. Brown
John M. L. Brown graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1970 and served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1974. In 1977, following graduation from the Vanderbilt University School of Law, he entered the private practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mr. Brown, a Certified Force Science Analyst, regularly represents law-enforcement personnel in high-profile excessive-force litigation in state and federal court and in departmental disciplinary proceedings. He is on call for the Fraternal Order of Police (local and national) and for the Southern States Police Benevolent Association to travel to the scene of police-involved shootings, in-custody deaths, and other critical incidents involving law-enforcement personnel. Typically, he will assist the officer throughout the investigation of the incident, including statements, if any, given to criminal investigators or internal affairs personnel.
Mr. Brown has been a featured speaker at numerous seminars dealing with critical incident issues, firearms litigation, ethical issues in cases involving firearms, and police liability in the federal courts.
Mr. Brown understands police officers are susceptible to being fired, sued, or prosecuted for a mere misstep or mistake in judgment. He has shown over the years that he is not afraid to take complicated cases with difficult facts. He has developed a working relationship with nationally known experts in the fields of firearms training, biomechanics of lethal encounters, police use of force, in-custody deaths, effects of TASER devices on resisting suspects, and the aftermath of law-enforcement lethal encounters.
As a family law attorney, Mr. Brown has over 40 years of experience, and he handles with care and precision cases that have dealt with adoption, divorce, child custody, child support and alimony, and more. Recognizing that legal issues can be an emotional and financial burden, Mr. Brown offers direct and personalized consultation through cost-efficient services.
